Horticulture and nutrition for food security of rural communities in Mozambique
place
Districts of Funhalouro, Homoine and Morrumbene, in the Province of Inhambane
OBJECTIVE
The project aims to improve horticultural production and the nutritional status of families in rural areas in the districts of Funhalouro, Homoine and Morrumbene, in the province of Inhambane.
MMI ACTIVITIES
MMI aims to improve the health and nutritional status of women and children in the target districts, through the following activities:
- Multilevel training aimed at health and social-health workers in the District for the identification and treatment of malnutrition. Health workers responsible for the diagnosis and outpatient and hospital treatment of cases of acute malnutrition will thus be trained;
- Organisation, implementation and monitoring of mobile health teams (Brigadas Movéis - BM) which will periodically reach rural areas with the aim of guaranteeing basic health services for the population of the most remote communities with objective difficulties in accessing health services, including the prevention and treatment of cases of acute and chronic malnutrition;
- Screening for malnutrition and anemia in women and children. Specifically, the Elementary Multipurpose Agents (APE) will carry out surveillance activities on the nutritional status and monitoring of growth and anemia of children under 5 years of age. Furthermore, the mothers of the children involved will immediately be the subject of specific nutritional education counseling on the correct nutrition of the child. Finally, pregnant women will be evaluated for malnutrition and anemia;
- Nutrition awareness and education sessions, during the BM outings, on public and individual health issues, with a particular focus on nutrition. Culinary demonstrations will also be held to improve the quality of nutrition of families in rural communities.
BENEFICIARIES
40,700 people will benefit from the project's action, including:
37,000 people accessing health services, of which 12,000 women and 25,000 children;
