UNiversal Health: active communities for access to primary health care in rural areas.

OBJECTIVE
Contribute to the improvement of the health status of the rural population in Inhambane and Sofala Provinces by increasing access to primary health care services through the implementation of a decentralised community health promotion program.
MMI ACTIVITIES
MMI's activities are concentrated in Inhambane Province, strengthening the Primary Health Care model focused on community needs, specifically:
- support district health services in organising and realising of Brigadas Móveis, integrating minimum services provided and guaranteeing regularity and quality, through actions such as: planning, implementation and monitoring of the service in the remote communities of the districts; training of health workers; provision of the necessary complementary equipment; implementation of social and health awareness activities for the population accessing the WBs (palestras).
- Identifying and strengthening, through specific training courses, key community figures engaged in health and social promotion activities (e.g. community leaders, multipurpose elementary agents - APEs and other actors recognised by the communities).
- Activation of Primary Care Services by key community figures in order to strengthen access to basic services for the most vulnerable, whose active surveillance and monitoring will facilitate the referral of serious cases through health centres.
- Support for the creation of a new Grassroots Community Organisation in order to create a local counterpart that brings together motivated and capable ACSs able to respond to the needs of the district.
- Implementation of community awareness campaigns on health promotion and access to health services.
BENEFICIARIES
526,600 people directly benefit from the project:
- 163,600 children under 5 years.
- 68,000 minors of age between 5 and 14 years.
- 295,000 over 14 years.
