Fighting malnutrition in Informal Settlements in Peri-urban Areas.
AREA OF INTERVENTION
- Centre Region - Province of Kadiogo
- City of Ouagadougou - District/Arrondissement of Boulmiougou, District/ Neighbourhood of Zagtouli
OBJECTIVE
Contribute to the prevention and treatment of acute/severe malnutrition in children aged 0-59 months, in the health area of Zagtouli, on the outskirts of Ouagadougou.
MMI ACTIVITIES
In order to improve the offer of prevention, screening and case management services for acute malnutrition cases, Medicus Mundi Italy carries out the following activities:
- Training of Health Centre staff and itinerant health workers on screening programmes and management of malnutrition cases and provision of equipment and materials for anthropometric measurements and promotional activities on nutrition.
- Community-based malnutrition screening and referral of cases to the Health Centre. Thanks to the skills acquired or improved, the health agents will carry out ad hoc organised screening campaigns, during which the health agents will teach families to recognise the signs of child malnutrition themselves, by searching for bilateral oedema and measuring the brachial perimeter/circumference of their children.
- Intake and follow-up of cases of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). Agents and/or families will report identified cases of malnutrition to the health centre to ensure medical follow-up.
- At family/community level, the health agents will teach families how to take charge and follow up to ensure the nutritional recovery of their malnourished children, through nutritional education and cooking demonstrations and supplementation cycles in local high-energy foods to be carried out directly at home. Mothers and families will be made aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, the introduction of supplementary feeding, and the frequency and diversification of meals.
